FAQs
Trek Relief (tax ID number 81-5114205) is a tax-exempt nonprofit public benefit corporation under IRS Code Section 501(c)(3). Donations to Trek Relief are tax-deductible as permitted by law. To clarify how tax deductibility applies to our programs, please review the guidelines below.

Under IRS regulations for 501(c)(3) organizations, when a participant receives tangible goods or services in exchange for a payment (such as lodging, meals, ground transportation, and excursion fees), only the portion of the payment that exceeds the Fair Market Value (FMV) of those benefits is tax-deductible.
Estimated Deductible Amount: Your initial payment receipt provides a good-faith estimate of the tax-deductible portion (Total Payment minus estimated Fair Market Value of goods/services received).
Post-Trip Reconciliation: Final tax-deductible amounts may fluctuate based on final group sizes and local currency exchange rates. Official, finalized tax documentation will be issued to participants within 30 days post-trip following the Trip Leader’s expense reconciliation.

Fluctuations & Final Reconciliation: Because group sizes and international exchange rates fluctuate, your final tax-deductible amount will be calculated post-trip once your Trip Leader submits all final group expenses. Final tax documentation will be issued to participants within 30 days post-trip.

Yes. Contributions made by third-party supporters toward a participant’s fundraising campaign are 100% tax-deductible because the donor receives no goods or services in return.
*To comply with IRS regulations, Trek Relief retains exclusive control and discretion over the allocation of all donated funds to ensure they directly advance our tax-exempt charitable mission.

Corporate matching programs (such as Benevity, CyberGrants, or YourCause) generally match gifts that support charitable operations, but cannot match payments that cover an employee’s personal travel expenses, lodging, or meals.
For Donors/Supporters: 100% of third-party donations made to a campaign page are eligible for corporate matching.
For Trip Participants: You may submit a corporate match request only for the tax-deductible portion of your trip fee (Total Fee minus Fair Market Value), as reflected on your initial receipt.
*Note: All corporate matching funds received by Trek Relief are credited to our general program funds to support overall project costs and cannot be used to reduce an individual’s personal out-of-pocket trip balance.

All third-party donations raised through your campaign page go directly to Trek Relief's charitable programs and are 100% tax-deductible for your donors. Any out-of-pocket payments you make directly to cover your remaining required balance are subject to the Fair Market Value (FMV) deduction rules described above.
